Once a Bad Boy Records intern, D.C. native Ti’Jean has definitely maneuvered through the ropes of the industry. He’s a self-described innovator of a sub-genre of Hip Hop, called Hip Rock, which as the name suggests, is a sonic blend fierce rhymes delivered over Rock music laced with Hip Hop production. Find out about his experiences in the business, a different view of D.C., and how you can experience his brand of music for yourself.

H2O:

We noticed that your style of music is called Hip Rock, in which you blend elements of Hip Hop and Rock music together. We, never hearing of this new genre of music, are curious to know; Are you the inventor and pioneer of this new style, or is it an existing movement that you’ve become hip to?

Ti’Jean:

Well, I like to consider myself a innovator of the movement called “Hip-Rock”. I consider myself a Hip-Hop artist but I’ve been extremely inspired by Rock music’s rawness, passion, style and honesty. There have been Hip-Hop artists who have successfully blended the two genres together. For example; Run-DMC “Walk This Way”, Eminem “White America”, and Jay-Z’s whole project “Collision Course” with Linkin Park. But just like Hip-Hop I embrace this as my culture and I’m taking it to another level creatively.

H2O:

An interesting fact we learned about you from your website is that you were once an intern at Bad Boy Entertainment, owned by Hip Hop mogul Sean “P. Diddy” Combs. How did you manage to land such an awesome gig, and what did you learn from your experience that has helped you professionally as an artist?

Ti’Jean:

When I was in DC about to move back to NYC to pursue my dream of being in the music industry I met one of the members of the street team and just asked “How can I be down?” Then he just said when I move to NYC to call him and I can start. So basically I called him, joined the team and hung up posters for months. Then after putting in work I asked Shawn Prez (Senior Director of Promotions) can I go up to the office and intern… so I got the internship and worked my way through almost every department even at Daddy’s House Studios and just learned the game from some of the best.

H2O:

You hail from our nation’s capital, Washington D.C., which has traditionally been known as the mecca of ‘cut throat’ style politics and high security, but also unfortunately a city of high crime and poverty. As an insider, tell us something about D.C. that you want the public to know that might change negative perceptions of Washington.

Ti’Jean:

There are many successful, educated and accomplished Black People living in the DC area. As we know it’s not rare for you to see crime and poverty here but it’s also not rare to see wealthy Black People who drive nice cars and live in big houses. I’m very proud that I grew up seeing both sides of the tracks… it was very motivational and it inspired me in many ways.

H2O:

We read your interview with ILiveHipHop.com, where we learned two cool and interesting things about you; a) You have started a youth foundation which helps kids through music, and b) You are developing your own online magazine. How is your progress coming along with those ventures and what is the most important lesson you’ve learned from the experience?

Ti’Jean:

Everything is going great with these ventures! It doesn’t even feel like work when you’re doing things that you love and its even better to give back at the same time. The magazine will be launching this year and the foundation is always getting involved in many events here and abroad. But what I learned from this whole experience is that everything starts with an idea and one person can make a change in anyone’s life.

H2O:

Tell us an interesting fact about yourself that few people know. We’re curious.

Ti’Jean:

I like Korean BBQ and I’m really ticklish. Haha!

H2O:

What are your musical goals for 2010?

Ti’Jean:

To capture the hearts & souls of my listeners. Also, to take my career to the next level, release my album and continue to make creative & passionate music.

Tens of thousands of people have been killed and at least 3m more left in need of international aid after Haiti suffered its worst earthquake in 200 years today.

The epicentre of the 7.0 magnitude quake was only 10 miles from Port-au-Prince, which has a population of about 1m, and the UN peacekeeping headquarters in the capital and parts of the presidential palace, national assembly and at least one hospital were destroyed.

International disaaster relief teams started arriving in Haiti as the country’s president said the huge earthquake that struck his impoverished Caribbean country of 9m people had overwhelmed its fragile infrastructure.

ILiveHipHop.Com Sits Down With Ti’Jean For A Quick Conversation

tijeannew5

(ILiveHipHop) When did you get started in the industry?

(Ti’Jean) Well, I started playing instruments & DJing when I was a kid. Then I started writing lyrics and making beats in High School. But I guess my real start in the industry was interning at WPGC 95.5 in DC and at Bad Boy Entertainment in NYC.

(ILiveHipHop) 2. Why did you decide to do Hip Rock oppose to Hip Hop?

(Ti’Jean) It wasn’t really something I decided to do. It’s not just music, it’s my culture just like Hip-Hop is a culture. It’s the way I live, dress, talk, walk, etc. I grew up listening to all genres of music but Hip-Hop & Rock have always been very influential in my life. So an artist I got tired of separating the two and said “Forget it, this is who I am and I’m just gonna roll with it.”

(ILiveHipHop) 3. Is there a difference?

(Ti’Jean) Actually, in my opinion there isn’t a major difference. The honesty, the attitude, and the passion is all the same.

(ILiveHipHop) 4. What other artist have you collab with?

(Ti’Jean) I haven’t done many collaborations. But for my mixtape I worked with DJ Vlad. But I’m very open to working with any musician, producer, or artist who wants to make timeless music.

(ILiveHipHop) 5.What was it like performing on the same stage as hip hop legend DMX?

(Ti’Jean) It was surreal. I was truly honored to perform on the same stage with such an amazing talent that I grew up listening to. As an artist you can always relate to another artist putting their heart & soul into the music… so it was a great experience.

(ILiveHipHop) 6.What can your fans expect from you in the future?

(Ti’Jean) World Domination! (laughs) You can expect me to be true to myself, the music, and to the fans. Expect to a get 100% on every song, album and every performance. And always expect me to make music that has no creative limits. I’m here to give back to the world and make a change the best way I know how.

(ILiveHipHop) 7. What are you working on now? Any performance in line?

(Ti’Jean) Well, I’m always performing every chance I get! But currently, I’m in the studio working on my album with my band & production team. Also, I have a foundation to help children achieve their dreams through music and education. I’m launching a online magazine soon too and of course always updating my blog website iAmHipRock.com.

(ILiveHipHop) 8. How can your fans keep up with your calendar and find out if you are in their city?

(Ti’Jean) You can check out everything going on everyday at iAmHipRock.com

(ILiveHipHop) 9.What advise would you give to an artist trying to get his or her start in the industry?

(Ti’Jean) I would say dream big and never give up on yourself! If you want this bad enough you’ll get it with hard work.

(ILiveHipHop) 10. What artist inspire you?

(Ti’Jean) Wow, that’s always a tricky question! So here’s a short list because there are so many artists who inspire me. So it’s Eminem, Jimi Hendrix, Tupac, Lenny Kravitz, & Bob Marley. I chose them because they’re honest, raw, passionate, rebellious, & never afraid to stand up for what they believe in.

(ILiveHipHop) 11. Are there any artist you dislike?

(Ti’Jean) (laughs) I don’t take what any artist does that personally to just totally dislike them. But one thing that I do dislike about some artists is when they do this for the wrong reason and then it shows through their work. Don’t waste your time or the listeners time.

(ILiveHipHop) 12. Do you think Hip Hop is dead???

(Ti’Jean) I don’t think it’s dead but I think it’s evolving and some people just can’t accept change. I appreciate Hip-Hop whether its from the North, South, East, West or Midwest. No matter the style, language, country, way you dress, or whether you wanna sing & rap on your songs… it doesn’t matter, its all Hip-Hop Music and Music will live forever.
